Compare two former world champions, Rocky ‘Brockton Blockbuster’ Marciano and Larry ‘The Easton Assassin’ Holmes. Marciano ended his career in September 1955 in his sixth and last defense in the Yankee Stadium, Bronx, New York, and improved his record with 43 Knockouts to 49: 0.
His opponent was the easy master of the heavyweight Knockout artist Archie ‘Old Mongoose’ Moore, 149-19-8 with 121 knockouts. Marciano came out of the screen in the second round to count 2 by referee Harry Kessler.
Moore was officially depressed after this four times, twice in the sixth, once in eighth place and counted in ninth place at 1:19 a.m.
Marciano’s record would be stopped in four rounds in April 1999 by Denmark’s Super Brian Nielsen in four rounds of the former world champion, terrible Tim Witherspoon. That has been 43 years since Marciano retired. In his next fight he lost to Dicky Ryan in the tenth round against Dicky Ryan, 47-4.
In September 1985, the former Olympic gold medalist and the current champion in the heavyweight of 1976 Michael ‘Jinx’ Spinks, 27: 0, Larry ‘The Easton Assassin’ Holmes, 48: 0, defeated in the Riviera Hotel & Casino, Outdoor Arena, Las Vegas, Nevada. The scores were 143-142 and 145-142. Spinks by winning the fifteenth and last round won the title.
After the fight, Holmes noticed: “Marciano couldn’t wear my jockstrap!” Some called it a racist remark. Why didn’t Holmes not spill that defeated him when he defeated a big mistake from his side? He was disappointed that he did not meet Marciano’s 49-0 record that Nielson agreed.
Holmes, 65-5, lost in January 1997 against Nielsen, 31-0, by shared decision in Denmark. Holmes ended his career at 69-6 with 44 knockouts.
When comparing Marciano’s hard attack at 5:10 ½ o’clock with the box style from Holmes at 6:03, you have to remember that Marciano 5 or 6 laps hits their arms until they found that they had problems holding them as opponents.
Holmes, on the other hand, had a very effective stitch. Most of the time he endured it and was rarely warned by the referee that he was not legal.
The shorter style of Marciano would come to low-landing-fingercuts with his right hand. Would he go under the deletion and land his right uppercut on the elbow of Holmes to hurt him?
Would Holme’s excerpts open on the face of Marciano as the former champion Ezzard ‘The Cincinnati Cobra’ Charles did before Marciano continued in the next round?
Both Marciano and Holmes are usually in the second half of the top ten ever.
Let us hear your comments about who would gain the blossom of your career between Marciano and Holmes.
